It is quite lovely to spend a night in Burgos, and if you visit this charming city don't miss the cathedral and its surrounding by night: the illumination is fantastic. If you don't mind staying far from the center (a mere 10 minutes drive by car) and saving money is on your mind - here is a very economic alternative: Hostal Averroes. This small and pleasant hostel is immaculate, nicely decorated and has all what you need: hot water, comfortable bed, continental breakfast (included), free parking (on the street), pleasant staff and best of all a price that is hard to beat - only €44 for a double room. We stayed for one night during our two-week road trip through northern Spain. The room was a steal on booking.com - 44 euro, which included breakfast. Long story short: this place is not for everyone. However, as long as you are comfortable with what you are getting, it can be a great base for exploring Burgos and the environs. Once we arrived, we realized why the price was so low - the hotel is in a residential area, occupying essentially two renovated floors of a high-rise apartment building. While the decor is the same as on the website, the website photos make the place look much fancier than it really is. You park on the street in front of the building. The website instructed us to call ahead with our arrival time. When we arrived, a gentleman who spoke very little English checked us in, and explained how the very basic breakfast (coffee, pre-packaged cakes, and simple toast with jam) would work in the morning. He also gave us a map of the city, and explained where the closest garage to the city center was. He also gave us a code for the entrance door since noone remained at the reception overnight. There is an elevator in the hotel, but it was out of order during our stay, so we had to carry our luggage two flights of stairs (no big deal). The room was clean, modern and surprisingly quiet. The bathroom was small, but modern and clean. The internet worked well. All in all, the stay worked for us, and you cannot beat the price. However, the place was unsettling at first - the rooms are not soundproof and we could hear the other guests coming and going. Also, I did not feel particularly safe knowing there was no staff on duty. I would recommend this place to independent travelers on a budget who do not mind the self-service nature of this hotel. Importantly, you need a car - it's about a 10-minute drive to the center of town.
